A plane crash is only the beginning for Dr. Ray Butler.

When Ray survives the wreck, he expects his greatest challenge will be finding his way back to civilization. Instead, he discovers a world transformed by a catastrophe no one can explain: ninety-five percent of the male population has suddenly died.

The surviving men have become something far more dangerous than merely rare.

They have become valuable.

After Ray befriends a young woman, the two make their way toward a nearby town in search of safety. What they find instead is a community determined to place Ray—and other surviving men—under what its leaders call “protective custody.”

Protection, however, begins to look increasingly like imprisonment.

With the men treated as an endangered resource and their freedom rapidly disappearing, Ray and the other captives must place their trust in a young girl he has only recently met. If she cannot help them escape, they may spend the rest of their lives as prisoners in a society that has already decided their future for them.
